In Dictionaries

First recorded in Blount, who took the word from Cotgrave. Cotgrave in turn cites Rabelais as authority for the word.
The OED missed the earlier example appearing in Healey. This must just be an oversight since the same source was obviously read and provided other -mancy citations. Mind you, it is a significant ante-dating.

idolomancy

A Gaulean term for divination by idols. Not (until very recently) recorded elsewhere except in reproducers of Gaule's list, and dictionaries. Mentioned by some of the more recent popular texts on divination.

From Late Latin idolum, from ancient Greek eidolon a false god, an idol.

1973 Gibson Complete Illust. Bk Div. &ast Prophecy (1989) 319: IDOLOMANCY: Use of idols or images for purposes of divination. The answers may come through dreams, by drawing lots, or anything else that believers may attribute to the power of such images. Some ancient oracles belonged in this category, and pagan priests often spoke from within hollow statues to give direct replies to questions regarding the future. In many cases, idolomancy has been closely identified with demonomancy, in as much as the idols simply represent the demons who are supposed to inhabit them when properly invoked.

The entry for this word, treated under the word element idolo- is badly, or rather, mistakenly, set out. The way it reads is that the Greek word manteia acutally means "divination by idols". It should have rather read
Idolomancy [Gr. manteia divination], by idols.

1899 OED s.v. idolo-: Idolomancy [Gr. manteia divination by idols]...
